Many capabilities are required to develop and commercialise an
inhaled pharmaceutical successfully. The active pharmaceutical
ingredient (API) needs to be formulated so that it can be inhaled
and reach the targeted area of the lungs. A high degree of control
over particle size, chemical and particle stability is required. An
inhaler device is needed in which the newly formulated drug can be
stored, protected from moisture, and which enables the formulation
to be inhaled on demand. Filling and packaging the formulation in
reservoirs or blisters must be considered early in the development
programme. All of these considerations need eventually to be
addressed at an industrial scale.
Vectura has the complete range of device and formulation
technologies to take an API and deliver a finished inhaled
pharmaceutical product and has proven its ability to industrialise
its products for marketing purposes.
Since Vectura’s devices are proprietary, any products
developed using these technologies are provided a high degree of
intellectual property protection as well as the ability to be
adapted for specific product requirements and unique branding
purposes.
